British-Nigerian fashion designer Liz Sanya has recently completed an ambitious project: crafting the world’s largest sandal in just 72 hours. This impressive feat occurred at Pixel Park in Lekki, Lagos, from January 2 to January 4, 2025.
The Record-Breaking Sandal
Sanya’s creation is a massive pink clog-style sandal measuring 3.156 meters (10 feet 4.2 inches) in width and 8.147 meters (26 feet 8.8 inches) in length. The project was a testament to her dedication and craftsmanship, aiming to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest sandal.
Inspiration and Background
Liz Sanya began designing shoes at the age of 12 and, by 14, was selling her creations to support her burgeoning passion. Born in Ibadan and inspired in Lagos, she chose Nigeria as the backdrop for this record attempt to honor her roots and the places that shaped her creative journey.
Community Support
The event garnered significant attention and support from the local community and notable figures, including music artists Mayorkun, Pheelz, P.Priime, and Taves, as well as music entrepreneurs Bizzle Osikoya and filmmaker Korty. Their presence highlighted the collaborative spirit and cultural pride surrounding Sanya’s endeavor.
Current Record Status
As of now, the official Guinness World Record for the largest sandal is held by a team from Municipio De Sahauyo, Mexico, with a traditional sandal measuring 7.45 meters (24 feet 5.31 inches) in length and 3.09 meters (10 feet 1.65 inches) in width. Sanya’s sandal surpasses these dimensions, and her attempt is currently under review by Guinness World Records.
